    There are several possibilities, but it is probably based on the Roman festival to Estros, the goddess of fertility.

    In ancient Rome, eggs and rabbits were symbols of fertility. In the festival, the men of the village would supposedly strip naked and roam the streets with leather straps. (I swear I am not making this up) The women who hoped to become pregnant would stand by the roadsides, and if the men beat her with their leather straps, she would get pregnent that year.

    What a way to celebrate the ascention of Christ! Clearly Easter is not appropriate for true Christians.

    The author above has gotten her name wrong. It was actually Eostre, also known as Ostara. For a more accurate description of the festivals associated with this Germanic (not Greek) deity, see the second website below.
